EVERYONE CHASES AFTER HAPPINESS

Everyone chases after happiness, yet few fully recognise what it is or where it comes from.

Happiness isn’t a destination but a journey needing certain inner qualities and a right state of mind to experience and reap. It’s neither sold as a commodity nor can be bought, except through carefully crafting one’s character and following a plan of action. For indeed, those who don’t plan will fail to realise desired results.

The Messenger of Allāh (ﷺ) said,

“Those among us (destined to be) from people of happiness [in the Hereafter] will (find it easy to) enact deeds of people of happiness..”

[ Sahīh Al-Bukhārī, #4948 ]

In other words, by choosing a path reflecting attitudes of happy people, one will recognise its reality and the ease and pleasantry in having good deeds done that are in themselves, characteristics of happy people.

Softening The Voice

Shaykh Jamāl Ibn Furayhān Al-Hārithī رحمه الله said:

“The woman should not speak with a soft voice in front of non-related men, whether she is speaking to them directly, such as buying and selling in the marketplace, or she is speaking to her husband’s brothers or one of his relatives or one of her marriageable relatives. This practice has become commonplace in some societies. And this applies even if she is speaking to men from behind a barrier, on the phone, through Paltalk, or through Messenger. And this applies even if she is speaking with students of knowledge, Shuyūkh, or Scholars.”

Giving in Charity – Open, Secretly, Pledges & Announcing Donations

Question:

The questioner asks: Does informing the people about what a person gives in charity or making it apparent to them deprive the person who does this of the reward (of spending in charity)? For example if every person from a particular group of people were to give a certain (known) amount in spending.

Answer:

If a person manifests his charity or the sum contributed is manifested to the people, or other than it, then this does not reduce his reward; because Allaah has praised those who spend their wealth in private and public; rather sometimes it may be that spending openly is better than spending secretly if there is a benefit in making it open, such that the people follow his (i.e. the spender’s) footsteps and do what he did. This may be similar to the one who guides to good and the one who guides to good is similar to its doer. “Whoever starts a good thing in Islam, and others do likewise after him, there will be written for him a reward like that of those who followed him in that until the day of resurrection.”(1) Yes. If a person knew in his heart that by manifesting it (i.e. spending in charity) he is intending to show off to the people and to be seen, so that they can praise him for performing this act of worship; then indeed this is from Riyaa, which a person must strive to free himself as much as he can. And Allaah is the one who grants success.

Shaykh Uthaymeen: Fataawa Noor ala ad-Darb page 12-13 vol 7

[1] A brief clarification: “Whoever starts a good thing in Islam, and others do likewise after him, there will be written for him a reward like that of those who followed him in that until the day of resurrection.”

Umm Zainab Fatimah bint Abbas al-Baghdadeeyah (d. 714 A.H.)

A Female Student of Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn Taymeeyah (d. 728 A.H.)

Al-Hafidh al-Emaad Ibn Katheer (d. 774 A.H.) -Rahimuhullaah- said:

‘She was the Shaykha, the righteous worshipper, the pious, Umm Zainab Fatimah bint Abbas bin Abee al-Fatah bin Muhammad al-Baghdadeeyah.

She was from the noble female scholars, she would enjoin good and forbid evil.

She stood against the Ahmadeeyah (a sect from the Mubtadia) in their  mingling of women and young men. She would criticise their practises and the practises of the people of Bida’ and others.

She would do that which not even men were capable of doing so.

She would attend the gatherings of Shaykh Taqi-uddeen Ibn Taymeeyah.

She benefited from those gatherings and others.  I heard Shaykh Taqi-uddeen praise her.

He would describe her with virtue and knowledge, and mention that she would remember a lot of the book ‘al-Mughni’ or most of it.

Also that he would have to prepare for her many Islaamic issues for discussion.

She had good questions, and was quick in  understanding. Many women memorised the complete Qur’aan from her, and from them was my mother in law Aeysha bint Siddiq and likewise did  the wife of Shaykh Jamal ud-Deen al-Mizzi and she also is the one who taught her daughter, who is my wife Umm Amatu-Rahmaan Zainab, may Allaah have mercy upon them all,  and honour them with His mercy and His Paradise. Ameen.’
