Knowledge & Forbearance

The Companion Abū Al-Dardāʾ – Allāh be pleased with him – said:

Knowledge only comes from learning, and forbearance comes from trying to be forbearing, and whoever seeks what is good will be given it, and whoever avoids evil will be protected from it.

Abū Khaythumah, Kitāb Al-ʿIlm (Albānī edition) ḥadīth 114. Al-Albānī grades its chain of transmission ṣaḥīḥ, and states it has been reported from the Prophet ﷺ.

Two Rewards

Question:

A relative of mine loves to read the Quran only he is not good at Arabic grammar and rules of recitation; what should he do?

Answer:

He should strive to read correctly, to understand what he is reading, and not be hasty. He should learn to recite from someone who knows better than him. By working hard, he gains a great reward, for the Prophet [صلى الله عليه وسلم] said,

The best of you is he who learns the Quran and teaches it. [1]

The Prophet [صلى الله عليه وسلم] also said,

The person who is proficient in the Quran is with the honourable, pious and just scribes (in heaven). As for the person who reads the Quran, though it is difficult for him and though he stutters, he has two rewards. [2]

The Best Language

Imaam Ash-Shafi’ee [رحمه الله] said:

“The language which Allaah favoured was the Arabic Language as he revealed his Noble Book in this (Arabic) and be made this the language of the seal of the Prophet Muhammad [صلى الله عليه وسلم]. And that is why we say that it is befitting for everyone who has the ability to learn Arabic – that they learn it, as it is the best language.”

Arabic Language

The Arabic language is tied fundamentally to the Qur’an

Umar bin al-Khattaab (radiallaahu anhu) said,

“Learn the Arabic (language) because it is from your religion, and learn the laws of inheritance because it is from your religion.”

(Reported by Ibn Abee Shaybah 6/118).

Notice here that we have a command to master that which is spoken and written (literacy) and also that which relates to numeracy, the laws of inheritance relate to calculations involving fractions.

Imaam al-Shaafi’ee (rahimahullaah) said, (as occurs in Irshaad al-Fuhool, p. 421):

“It is obligatory upon every Muslim to learn from the Arabic language what allows him to make effort in fulfilling his obligations.”

Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said,

“For the Arabic language itself is from the religion, having knowledge of it is an obligation because understanding the Book and the Sunnah is an obligation. And (the religion) cannot be understood except by understanding the Arabic language, and that without which an obligation cannot be fulfilled is itself obligatory. Then from it is that which is obligatory upon everyone individually, and from it is that which is a collective obligation.”

(al-Iqtidaa p. 295).

Imaam al-Shawkaanee (rahimahullaah) said,

“Know that when the Book and the Sunnah have come in the language of the Arabs and knowledge of them is dependent upon knowledge of (Arabic) then knowledge of it is the most important of obligations.”

(Irshaad al-Fuhool, p. 38).
